Every Second Counts

I got to see a sneak preview of the CrossFit Movie, Every Second Counts at the Affiliate Gathering in February when it was in it's final stages of production. It is an intense and action packed movie!

This event is going to be a blast! We've been working behind the scenes on a couple of previews before the movie - and who can beat getting together with a room full of amazing people, having dinner and drinks & watching a CrossFit movie!?! There are 17 seats left - and today is the last day to purchase!

The Murph

Murph is one of the toughest workouts I have ever taken on. The Murph is a fundraiser event created to raise money for the The Naval Special Warfare Foundation (NSWF) in honor of Navy Seal, Michael Murphy's service & life. Michael was killed in the line of duty and awarded the medal of honor (see video below) this was his favorite workout.

There were three levels of Murph this weekend at CrossFit Austin

Level 1: as prescribed
Level 2: jumping pull ups & real push ups
Level 3: jumping pull ups & push ups on your knees

I took on Level 2 and made sure I did strict push ups -- on my toes, chest to the ground. It took longer but was well worth it!
The workout:
1 Mile
100 Pull-ups
200 Push-ups
300 Squat
1 Mile
You could break it up any way you wanted, so in between the mile runs I chose to do 5-10-15 of pull ups, push ups, and squats -- 20 Rounds.

This was my experience:
Rounds 1-8: Steady as we go.....think of the soldiers....push harder....
Round 9: Oh my God, I'm only on Round 9....I can barely breathe....What did I eat for dinner last night....How much water did I have this AM....Why did I think it was okay to have a Modelo with dinner....I'm so dizzy....I've never sweat this much in a morning workout.....
Round 10: GET IT TOGETHER
Round 10-12: The soldiers...fight fight fight fight fight fight fight
Round 13: Have to stop Counting up to 20...need to count down
Rounds 7-1: Almost there...you can do this...finish it...fight fight fight fight fight fight
Last 1 mile Run: Feel awesome....nice breeze....grateful to be alive and have the opportunity to do things like this
TIME!!!!!

My first Murph took me a little over 53 minutes - doesn't even come close to what our troops endure on a daily basis. So grateful for all soldiers, in every branch of the military.
Zac & I after I was able to stand again...swear my hair didn't look like that when we arrived ;)

CrossFit Austin put on an awesome event! Can't wait for next year!

Hooverball & BBQ Summer Kick Off

Summer is here!!! CrossFit Central kicked off the summer weather with a BBQ and Hooverball tournament. I honestly never knew about Hooverball until Big Mike approached us with the idea. It's history goes back to President Hoover loping a 6lb med ball over a volleyball net. This weekend we used slightly heavier equipment --> 8, 12, 14 pound med balls. There was a ton of amazing food complete with BBQ chicken and sausage from the amazing CrossFit chefs - Lance Cantu, Mike Gregory, and Mike Anderson It was a blast!

The 21st Century Family Business

Most people will tell you not to get into business with your family and friends. Not us.

Most companies will set up rules and regulations to keep people from forming true relationships outside of work other than a business relationship. Not us.

Most people leave work on Friday, thankful they don't have to see their co-workers for two days. Not Us.

Most People can't wait for Friday (TGIF!!!) because that means they get to escape from work, stress, and pressure. Not Us

The CrossFit Central staff is made up of family members, friends, and most of the coaches have some sort of connection to Lubbock, West Texas, big families, or farming and ranching. This is not by accident. The Central team is designed this way - and if you can't claim one of the above categories, you are quickly made into a friend and family member. We celebrate together, work together, travel together, push each other, and call each other out when needed. We work on the weekends and look forward to events, to us Friday is just another day & Saturday is a great opportunity to do something fun for the community.

My Story

A year ago this May Zac, my fiance turned husband, and I moved to Austin. We were two young kids with passion in our hearts, fire in our bellies, and a dream - that's it. We moved with no jobs....not even with a promise of a job....or a clue where we might work.... and enough money to live for two months. We knew that Austin was the city to live in for anyone with creativity, drive, and determination. So we packed up our dog Deacon and our belongings (which consisted of my bed from college, Zac's couch, a Pink Floyd poster, some Titans paraphernalia, and a shower curtain) and hit the road to pursue our new journey.

Zac had a dream of working in a creative field - Advertising or Gaming and I wanted to pursue writing or publishing. We both set goals to have "temporary jobs" within two months - Something to pay the bills while we looked for our real career. Within that time frame we both got our temporary jobs. Zac was working at Frost Bank as a teller and I was helping Jeremy Thiel organize the paperwork side of his business, CrossFit Central. Zac and I then set another goal - His: By Feb. 27th he would be in a career field that he desired. Mine: By January I would move from being Jeremy's personal assistant to a prominent leadership role in the CrossFit Central community.

Not too long into the month of January I took over a few jobs at CrossFit Central, throwing me deeper into this amazing community! From there I kept pushing to learn more, do more, be more. On February 2nd Zac got a job at Idea City, an advertising agency - The field that he is most passionate about and a company that cultivates creative and passionate minds.

Below are a few pictures of Zac and I when we lived in Lubbock. Almost 2 years ago:

My Sister in Law and I a few months before moving to Austin

Me with my girlfriends, I was in CFCentral programs for roughly 2 months:
Our fitness routine prior to Crossfit consisted of running 2-5 miles a few times a week and dropping into a boxing cardio class twice a month. We thought we were pretty fit individuals - until we joined CrossFit Central. I saw results immediatley after I joined the Rowing Dock Boot Camp. Four months later I joined the CrossFit Indoor program and it changed my life.

I had never really been inside a weight room and had never laid my hands on a barbell or plates -- ever -- prior to CrossFit. In High School my sport was Cheerleading, our coaches were more concerned about our stunts and getting back flips than workouts that resembled CrossFit. If I only knew then what I know now........Today words such as Olympic lifts, clean and jerk, butterfly pull ups are in my every day vocabulary.

CrossFit has shown me that I am always capable of more than I think I am. After coming to a CrossFit class, taking on the toughest workouts in the world, and proving everyday that I am capable just by showing up.....well, it makes every task seem achievable. I feel strong in mind and body. I completed my first Triathlon and have plans to take on my first half marathon. These are things that I always kept in my "wouldn't it be nice/maybe someday" file and now I have accomplished them!! I've lost 10 pounds and have gone from always teetering between a size 4 & 6 to a consistent size 4. I have more confidence and so much more energy!!

What's Next? I want to do more CrossFit workouts as prescribed, I want to drop 5% body fat in the next 8 weeks. I want to not die of exhaustion during the half marathon!!! 2009 - Bring It!!!
